Promoting Horticulture in the Community

About the Society

Our Location

hort1We meet in the Horticultural Hall, Mount Macedon Road, Mount Macedon (turn in at the Golf Club) on the first Tuesday of every month.

Speakers Nights

Our Society's Charter is about "Promoting Horticulture". To do this we invite speakers to our monthly meetings. Speakers have included well known radio personalities, nurserymen, plant specialists, and landscape designers. These talks are on various subjects including:

  • specialist plant material,
  • garden design, and
  • gardens of the world.

Our President Stephen Ryan, a society member for over 35 years, has a 'show and tell' of rare and unusual plants at the end of each speaker meeting. His knowledge of plants is unsurpassed. Our monthly business meetings are open to all members. We maintain a comprehensive lending library for members' use, and members are entitled to discounts at selected nurseries in the Macedon Region. We have over 150 members.

Community Activities

The Society is also active in the local community. We have donated plants, funds or expertise to various clubs, organisations and activities, including the regeneration of StanleyPark and the beautification of Mount Macedon Road. We also fund a scholarship at Burnley Horticultural College.

Functions & Events

hort2We hold various functions and events throughout the year and dates for these these will be posted on the Events Calendar of Mount Macedon On-Line. They include:

March Competitive Show:

Our competitive show has been revamped recently, and is of keen interest to all people who wish to show off treasures from their gardens. There is also a children's section, which is wonderful for getting children interested in gardening. If you require a schedule please send your details to PO Box 30, Mt Macedon 3441 and we will send one to you.

Autumn Open Gardens:

On the last weekend in April, some of the Mount's best gardens are opened to the public, with other activities to be announced. Check newspapers and the Events Calendar for details.

Spring Open Gardens:

Held during the first weekend in November, it has the same format as the Autumn event.

Seminars:

A two day seminar on selected subjects is run each autumn, with fascinating speakers and a different theme each year. Visits to gardens which illustrate the theme are included, and gourmet meals will delight the fussiest palate. (There may also be a surprise third day.) To go on the mailing list for the seminar prospectus, please send us your details or contact Janet Moritz on (03) 5427 0426.

Spring Rare Plant Fair:

This is an extravaganza not to be missed. It is held the third weekend of September and all plant enthusiasts should mark it in their calendars. There are 20-25 specialist growers with treasures that are a delight. Two gardens are opened also.

Garden Tours:

We can organise Magical Garden Tours for your group. Please ring Mary Bull on (03) 5426 2448 for details. We can suit your needs: morning/afternoon teas, lunch and two or three gardens in any combination you require.
